Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2018 – Domaine Faiveley

Gevrey-Chambertin Domaine Faiveley Vieilles Vignes 2018

Colore rosso rubino profondo, penetrabile.

Gevrey-Chambertin Domaine Faiveley Vieilles Vignes 2018

Domaine Faiveley is one of the largest and most important estates in Burgundy. Despite this territorial and productive extension, his work remains based on maintaining high quality, also being able to count on 75% of the vineyards being organic. This Gevrey-Chambertin 2018 Village from old vineyards (vines between 50 and 80 years old) grows on marl-clayey soil with a high presence of iron. Daily pressing, on the lees for 19 days, then 14 months in French oak barrels with moderate toasting. Finally two months of further maturation in the tank.

Deep ruby red color, penetrable. On the nose it appears didactic, clean, not too intense but persistent. Red blackberry fruit, black cherry, then a beautiful dark floral where a clear red rose and a light violet stand out. Finally, undergrowth with mushrooms and soil.

On the palate it is dry, rather soft, full-bodied (not too much to be a Gevrey C.), with a freshness that is present but not slender and a discreet minerality that finishes. The sip is coherent, rewarding and well balanced, warm but not too much.

I appreciated this wine more the day after opening, when I found it more relaxed and expressive. Obviously it is a good wine, indeed I would say excellent, but having drunk some Burgundy in recent years, I would not place it in a hypothetical “top ten”. It is very balanced, pleasant, accompanies the meal well and is absolutely well made. However, in my opinion, it is a wine that lacks a little poetry. It doesn’t excite and doesn’t surprise even with some flaws. The name is a blazon and perhaps this penalizes it a bit on a psychological level, since despite being a village (in any case from old vineyards) I would have expected an extra shot. At least one extension that would make me remember him. Also because at its price you can find wines ready to tell us something, try to amaze us and make us remember them over time (if you are good, even many). Maybe not to Gevrey Chambertin.
