For some time now I have re-evaluated mezzettes, starting to buy some, in particular Burgundy and Bordeaux. Half bottles, too often mistreated, I find instead to be an intelligent way to be able to taste more wines (especially if they are expensive) and reduce spending. Today I was pleased to open this Pastourelle 2009 (Cabernet Sauvignon 50%, Merlot 36%, Cabernet Franc 11%, Petit Verdot 2%, Carmenére 1%), second wine from Châteaux Clerc Milon. We are in the heart of Pauillac, not far from Château Lafite Rothschild. In 1970, sensing its potential, it was the most famous Baron in the wine world who purchased the 16 hectares of the estate, which in the meantime had become 40.

The color is a deep, impenetrable ruby red with beautiful crimson reflections. Very complex, intense and persistent nose of violet, undergrowth, mushrooms, black truffle, balsamic push and mentholated finish.

The attack is rather soft and consistent on the palate, with evident extractive intensity which is balanced by good freshness and extremely smooth and elegant tannins. It closes with a liquorice finish, strangely a little short.

Personally I appreciated this bottle more than many other second wines (but also some first ones) from more famous Châteaux.

It’s not easy to find it, but if you happen to find it at a fair price (as in my case) it’s definitely an excellent deal to enjoy a 2009 Pauillac without breaking the bank.
