Barbaresco Starderi 2018 – Renato Fenocchio

Barbaresco Starderi 2018 – Renato Fenocchio

Barbaresco Starderi 2018 – Renato Fenocchio

The 2018 increasingly seems, glass in hand, like a vintage on a “fixed-term contract”. I had a striking confirmation of this by comparing two crus from the same hand – the artisanal, down-to-earth and always admirable one of Renato Fenocchio – and finding myself faced with two completely different evolutionary speeds.

If the Rombone 2018, opened last week, had left me with a lingering sense of melancholy – still enjoyable, of course, but marked by tertiary aromas already in the foreground and the first signs of oxidative fatigue – the Starderi is playing in a completely different league. It shows a balance the “sibling” lacked and offers a sharp snapshot of what drinkability means in the noblest sense of the word.

In the glass, the colours differ, but not by much: Rombone is a touch more concentrated, Starderi more luminous. It’s on the nose that the gap really opens up. Starderi shows a freshness that simply doesn’t compare with its brother, which was already resting on very mature notes. Starderi, instead, seems to be at the apex of its curve, in perfect balance between elegance and expressiveness.

Everything is in its place, both on the nose and on the palate: the fruit is intact, not yet giving way, supported by a vibrant acidic backbone that sets the pace of the sip, with nebbiolo’s balsamic notes still whispering “drink, drink, drink…”. The tannins are deeply composed and polished, perfectly integrated into the body of the wine. It’s a resolved, vibrant wine that reconciles you with this tricky vintage and stands out, on my personal scorecard, as one of the best bottles of the year.

A moment of grace which, for anyone who happens to have a bottle laid down, I’d suggest enjoying hic et nunc, without the temptation to hope for further evolution, given how this vintage is behaving.
